Sex in the Suburbs: A Who's Who

The new Sex in the City movie opened recently and heralding its premiere are the male critics collectively groaning. At first I wondered why but then after listening to one of them it became clear to me: the characters are really quite horrible. Could it be that some of the appeal of the show is that audience members take delight in the demise of mean but fabulously wealthy individuals? I'd like to think that we can rejoice in the happiness of others and construct stories around characters that we not only admire but can relate to very personally. After all, in real life I have three fabulous friends (one of whom is a Charlotte!) and we are wonderful people indeed! Surely the show speaks to so many because of its themes of solidarity, friendship, and shopping; and surely, too, those themes can just as easily be portrayed with characters that are loving and genuine. Are people so base that they need bad characters to feel better about themselves or can we find entertainment with inspiring characters?

So here's the first challenge: Design a character that you can write your stories about. It can be as close to the true you or as far as you want. As this is primarily a work of fiction, we can assume that most of it is make-believe unless you choose to tell us otherwise. After all, it helps to work out reality in a fiction sometimes. Post your character description as a comment to this post, please. Oh yeah, and enjoy!

This character is based on my reality as you will read.
Name: Meadow
Height: 5 3
Gender: female
Age: 27 (or will be as of Aug. 4 :) )
Sign: Leo
Weight: shhhhh!

In high school, Meadow was the lead singer and guitarist in a band but before the band's first major gig, the band dissolved due to artistic differences.
True, sort of. I did start a band and we wrote a few songs but before we even started looking for gigs we ended up spending more time shopping and talking about boys than practicing
She attended UNC at Wilmington to study marine biology but found she needed to change majors because she spent too much time surfing.
A re-interpretation of the truth. I went to Appalachian, as you know, but i wish I could say skiing was what prompted my eventual major switch. Really it was too many video games and again not enough practice
After graduating college, Meadow chose to backpack across Europe and picked up odd jobs here and there to pay her way. She often stayed in youth hostels and would even busk in the streets from time to time. She found many romances until at last she found her true love, another American and a Scientist, at an outdoor cafe in Spain. They married in a typical English garden in some small town in Wales and honeymooned just outside of Cardiff.
Not true - but doesn't that sound like so much fun?! I did spend some time abroad and Rick did live in Spain for a year but the rest is fantasy.
The two love birds returned to Raleigh to start a family and now Meadow is a stay-at-home mom of a bouncing baby boy named Bear. She also makes handbags to support herself.
True! I want to write about a character very much like me in this particular stage in my life. I have a lot to say about it!

Character: Serenity
Height: 5'9"
Gender: Female
Age: 27
Birthday: April 18th
Sign: Aries
Status: Married
Weight: 130s

In high school, Serenity liked to experiment with different fashions. She dabbled in many different future careers from writing/journalism to auto repair. Classes were always secondary for her to socializing with her 3 best friends.

In college, she quickly fell into her niche as a programmer and even more quickly fell in love with Jack Ryan, the man she knew she'd marry.

After college, the two married and she was whisked around the world in the wild life of a military wife. She's now a SAHM to a brand new baby girl named Lila.

Serenity still loves computers, movies, playing games, getting outside (though she doesn't do enough of that), shopping, sewing (in many forms), and just being a great wife and mom.

------------

This is mostly me, though I did fudge a bit with the traveling around the world. LOL
